Wanna’ reminisce? Or are you too young (or too old) to remember that very famous sitcom, The Brady Bunch, that aired from 1969 to 1974? Well, this take-off, A Very Brady Musical, making its world premiere at Theatre West in Los Angeles, offers up an evening of fun, music and laughter. Though not quite as innocent as the original Brady series loved by children of all ages, this one is definitely not for the children, but great fun for adults.
Sherwood Schwartz created the sitcom and this production is a real family affair. He is the Executive Producer while his son and partner, Lloyd J. Schwartz wrote and directed the musical. His daughter, Hope Juber (sister of Lloyd) and her husband, Laurence Juber, wrote the lyrics and music. Lloyd’s wife (Barbara Mallory) plays Carol and is also Associate Producer of the show.
Why shouldn’t this be for “kids?” Well, here is the plot, funny from start to finish with a super cast. Mike Brady (John Cygan) and his three sons have united in marriage with Carol Brady and her three daughters in a very lovey-dovey relationship by all. The only hitch in their marriage is that, Mike and Carol never have time alone; there are always six kids around the house. So---, they never get a chance to have sex! They are desperately trying to arrange for a way to be “alone at last.” One evening the Brady kids overhear their parents having an argument and think they may be headed for a divorce. After seeking advice from Alice (Kathy Garrick), the family housekeeper, they decide to try to raise money to pay for a marriage counselor for Mike and Carol. Greg (Elliot Kevin Schwartz, another family member) attempts to operate a car service, Marcia (Erin Holt) gets a job at a dating service, Peter (Justin
Meloni) and Jan Laura Marion) put on magic shows and Bobby (Adam Conger) and Cindy (Kelly Stables)start searching for money where they probably shouldn’t. With their naïveté, all six end up in the local jail only to discover that Mike and Carol were merely reading from a play. But just like any sitcom, “all’s well that ends well.” Other cast members include Matthew Hoffman, Selah Victor, Roger Cruz and Mary Garripoli. Playing through July 20, 2008.
