The Memory Thief is about a lonely young man Lukas (Mark Webber) who works as a tollbooth operator in Los Angeles. His life is seemingly monotonous with no real expectations. He meets a Holocaust survivor by chance who introduces him to the world of the Jews of World War II. His compassion for these people soon overtakes him and he becomes obsessed with the history of that time. He volunteers to tape testimonies of survivors and begins to find a purpose in his life. He purchases a mezuzah and a prayer shawl and becomes so possessed as to think he has found his true identity. He becomes more fanatic, falls more deeply into unreality and “becomes” one of the surviving Jews. The film features actual survivor testimonies conducted and shot by writer/director Gil Kofman. Others in the cast include Machel Miner, Jerry Adler, Alan Rich, Peter Jacobson, Douglas Spain and Stella Hudgens. Exceptionally
good acting, a very unusual and interesting film. Running time 95 minutes. Playing at Laemmle’s Music Hall in Beverly Hills.
