Voice Lessons

Terrific!  Funny beyond measure!  Exceptional cast!  Great Direction!  I can go on and on. Most theatre goers in Los Angeles are familiar with the innumerable provoking comedies with which Justin Tanner, (winner of LA Weekly, Drama Critics Circle, PEN WEST and Dramalogue awards) has so successfully filled our stages. This is the latest in his prolific body of work, and what a success.

It is hard to conceive of the show, or even know if it would work, however, without lead actress, Laurie Metcalf, (member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Roseanne, Emmy and Ovation winner, Tony nominee).  She is utterly superb as the outlandish and untalented ‘want ta be’ singer.  Rarely have I seen an actress with such abandon and freedom; brave beyond words.

French Stewart (Third Rock From the Sun, LA Weekly winner, SAG Award nominee) is delightfully subtle as the overeducated vocal coach forced through financial hardship to take on this community theater performer determined to rise to stardom. Together Metcalf and Stewart are irresistibly hilarious and I couldn’t stop laughing.  The ensemble was well rounded out with Maile Flanagan (Emmy winner).
Director Bart DeLorenzo struck the perfect note, keeping the pace wild and furious, encouraging the actors to take chances and give their all.  He cannot be commended highly enough.

For a short one hour night out on the town, with good laughs and up to date, meaningful comedy, this is the show for you.  I hope it extends indefinitely.
